To Gary Gambrell, for his selection of Alan Keyes and Herman Cain as more qualified than Barack Obama as President, I present the very first and I hope last Foot in Mouth Award.
Alan Keyes, is the very definition of a perennial candidate. A perennial candidate is one "who frequently runs for public office with a record of success that is either infrequent or non-existent. Perennial candidates are often either members of minority political parties or have political opinions that are not mainstream. They may run not with any serious hope of gaining office, but in order to promote their views or themselves."
Mr. Gambrell proudly notes his vote for Alan Keyes in the 1996 Presidential primary in a letter dated January 24 and published in the Community Forum of the Gainesville Times.
Alan Keyes clearly is the more distinguished collegian having performed in the Glee Club instead of editing the Law Review. While Obama has actually won a political campaign for President and the Senate, Keyes is the much more experienced campaigner. Keyes campaigned and lost running for U.S. President in 1996, 2000, and 2008. He ran and lost in campaigns for the U.S. Senate in 1988, 1992, and, in 2004, against Barack Obama in Illinois.
Mr. Gambrell also notes his vote for Herman Cain, aka the Hermanator, great self promotor, businessman, and talk radio show host. The talk radio host got 26% of the primary vote in his failed 2004 Senate bid. His campaign ended with about $300,000 of debt. Mr. Cain was not even able to raise enough money to be a credible politician.
But, these "politicians," if that is what they are, were selected by Mr. Gambrall as examples. Gambrell leaves us guessing as to why he voted for these two ambitious black men. He clearly believes both are more objectively qualified than Barack Obama to hold political office.
Ambition is good. Over-reaching can lead to personal growth. But losing repeatedly or 'Hermanating' yourself has no reward or purpose. So for your hubris Mr. Gambrell, I can say this about your choices in the polling place.
"Here's to you, Mr. Gambrell, the first and I hope only 'Foot in Mouth Award.' May you someday find a foot as big as your mouth."
