Facts on Unemployment

Some new numbers out today on unemployment in the State of Georgia.

"The Georgia Department of Labor says unemployment insurance claims shot up 174 percent last month compared to December 2007, with one of the top increases coming in the Gainesville area..

Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond describes the increase as "stunning and sobering."

Among metropolitian areas with the highest increase in claims last month, Rome and Dalton were up about 350 percent and Gainesville 216 percent."

That's not real news to anyone. Well, at least not anyone who's been visiting the Georgia Department of Labor's Gainesville Career Center.

Go in and ask the guard how many people come in a day. For weeks, at least November and December, 700 to 750 people were coming in per day. When those kind of numbers are coming in on Mondays and Tuesdays, that's new termination.

How come these numbers are just now showing up in statistics?
